Senate Patent Reform Hearing May 1 2014
Executive Business Meeting Discussion of Patent Reform (19:13-24:34)
[Earlier in the meeting Senator Leahy discussed nominees and getting to quorum for the meeting. We have only transcribed the portions of the meeting that pertained to the pending patent reform bill.] Senator Leahy did issue a statement saying he was pleased with progress on the patent reform bill.
I do want to thank Senators.. Senator Blumenthal has joined us .. I do want to thank the Senators – many of you have been working on weekends and late in the evenings with me and my staff .. I should say especially staff – Alex – and others on the patent bill. And we are – we have settled the vast majority of the issues in there and I think by next week we can – put over once – but by next week we can actually start marking up a manager’s package I just want to .. I know sometimes members get worried when they see me heading toward them during a vote on the floor, but I do appreciate both the Republicans and Democrats have worked hard on this .. We’ve also been joined by Senator Sessions – we have one, two, three, four .. [counting under his breath] .. eight OK. Because we have two Republicans here we can hold over…
[Begins talking about Judicial nominees, then…] and number two what you’ve said about the patent bill I also agree with. And so my statement is simply stating that we make progress and am looking forward to that progress coming to fruition to a bill shortly.
Well thank you very much and as always
I’ll put the statement in the record
Make it part of the record and the ranking member and I work closely on these.. we have one more Senator ..
Do we have any Republicans that are on their way? OK we’ll probably have to get – we’ve got two Republicans here we probably in need of one more Democrat then.
We do have and when they do get here, we’ll do the U.S. Attorney.. [begins taking about Judges].. OK Senator Klobuchar is now here. First have the clerk call the roll just for ten minutes just to establish we have a quorum.
Clerk and Senators roll call
Senator Feinstein – here. Senator Schumer not there. Senator Durbin – here. Senator Whitehouse – here. Senator Klobuchar – here. Senator Franken – here. Senator King? – not there. Senator Blumenthal – not there. Senator Hirono – here. Senator Grassley – here. Senator Hatch – not there. Senator Sessions – here. Senator Graham – not there. Senator Cornyn – not there. Senator Lee – not there. Senator Cruz – not there. Senator Flake – not there. Senator Leahy – here.
[Senator Leahy then had votes on Judges…] .. and as I mentioned before what is happening on the Patent Transparency and again I appreciate the work of Senator Grassley and both Democrats and Republicans worked hard on this matter. If there is nothing further to come before the committee we will stand in recess I thank you all.
